Brewing tips

The right way to brew your coffee is how you like it best. That being said, here are few tips that'll guarantee you a better coffee experience

Getting the right beans

This is the fundamental step towards making a great cup of coffee. It is important that you buy freshly roasted coffee as it starts going stale 1-2 months after roasting. We got you covered here, each batch is freshly roasted on receipt of your order.

There are three different roasts that you can buy here at Nirvana, light, medium and dark. Choose the right roast to suit your palate. We do recommend the lighter roasts which are more aromatic and truer to their origin flavours. The shorter time they spend in the roaster also means the beneficial compounds in the beans are preserved.

Choosing the right grind size

Choose the right grind size. Grinds that are too fine result in over-extraction and leave the coffee tasting bitter. Grinds that are too coarse result in under extraction. Choose the grind size depending on your brewing method and equipment.

Should I add milk/sugar to my coffee?

In most cases, the answer would be no. Milk/cream/sugar all mask the flavour of the coffee. However, if it's South Indian Filter Coffee you're drinking, do add milk.

What is the ideal coffee to water ratio while brewing?

Want to get this just right? Measure coffee by weight rather than volume. A ratio of 1:20, that is one part of coffee and 20 parts of water or 7.5 grams of coffee for every 150 ml, is a good starter. However, this is again an matter of personal preference and it's best to experiment and find your perfect ratio.

What water should I use and how hot should it be while brewing?

Use filtered and uncoordinated water. The ideal temperature for brewing is between 90-95° Celsius. Bring you water up to a boil, take it off the heat for around 45 seconds before you pour over the coffee grounds.
